Our Grounds

Wander and explore our rustic cottage-style grounds finding surprises and adventures. We just ask that you stay within the fenced areas to keep our equines safe from excursions out to the road. Heritage rose bushes, sweet jasmine, vineyard and orchards, vegetable gardens and so much more. Paths lead through the friendship garden to visit the miniature horses and the former fenced in horse pasture turned victory garden is a splendid place for a pup to run free. Or meander into the picnic table garden (where the “come ‘n git it” dinner bell resides high on a post) and enjoy sitting under Isabella, the very old grape vine from Italy, whose shade make it significantly cooler than a typical sunny day. Sitting out on the grassy knoll under the tall Liquid Amber trees is a great place to enjoy a beverage and watch the cars go by. Or find the hammock and slip into a bit of quiet heaven.

The face of the “Jones Ranch” (as this Fleming Jones Homestead B&B was known in the nineteenth century) changes seasonally. Spring is a brilliant green with a bounty of colorful irises and lilacs and song birds nesting and geese migrating. Summer heralds in the California brown as the Jones planted oats and wheat become golden toned with color spots from roses and day lilies to ripening grapes. The swallow family comes to nest and our “resident” red shouldered hawk can be heard hunting the fields. Geese start to migrate again as the season ends and an occasional owl can be heard. Fall is spectacular with brilliant gold, yellow, red and brown hues on the seasonal trees and crisp evenings/warm days, you can feel the season change and smell it. The waft of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves challenges the fig, apples and pear fragrances. Winter wraps the “Pharm”, as we call it, into hibernation with dark green leaves on the evergreens as narcissus and daffodils poke their happy faces upward even through the occasional dusting of snow.

Wildlife abounds on the “Pharm’s” eleven acres: ranging from the nightly deer visit to the rare skunk or fox. Perhaps the most noted are the enchanting sounds of the crickets, who add harmony to the dark starlit sky. People often ask if it is quiet at our Bed and Breakfast, so here is what it sounds like at night in the summer We especially treasure our dragonflies also known as "mosquito hunters" as they keep bad bugs away.

Domestic animals on the Ranch are eclipsed by two: Sebastian and Cappuccino, our two playful geriatric donkeys. But should you look further, our World Champion/Top Ten winning miniature horses enjoy carrots and apples too. There is more about the Robin's Nest Ranch horses at our "Pharm" page and yes – you are invited to interact with them. Our barn cat, Boots, is very friendly – but please do not let him inside as he is a cat with a job.
